Abstract
A series of radiation-hardenable monomeric and polymeric impregnants -- including acrylic monomers, epoxy urethanes, unsaturated polyesters, and acrylate-modified polyesters -- was tested for possible application to wooden archaeological objects for preservation. The low viscosity impregnants cured with minimal shrinkage of 6-10%. Shrinkage could be reduced by changing the formulation; e.g., adding approximately 10% modified epoxy resin to unsaturated polyesters reduced shrinkage by a third. The acrylic-modified epoxy resins gave the lowest shrinkage, but also had relatively high viscosity and showed increased shrinkage on dilution with monomers. The crosslinking which occurred in some systems was not desirable from the point of view of preservation, but the crosslinking-type systems cured with lower radiation doses, thus minimizing the damage to the specimen being treated. -- AATA
