The application of electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques permits the dating of bone and the establishment of relative chronologies within an archaeological site using only a few grams of bone. Sample preparation is minimal, the subsequent ESR measurement is simple and fast, and the age range is from 1000 years to approximately one million years. There are, however, problems associated with this method, and some of these problems are discussed.
