Research during the last 50 years concerning prehistoric agricultural methods in northwest Europe has been mostly oriented towards the reconstruction of tools, particularly various types of plows. Attempts to answer questions about the action of the implement and the interpretation of the marks left by it. Furrows are often revealed below the cultivated soil in the excavated layers. Through experiments, it has become possible to distinguish between the plow types used. Experiments have been carried out to recreate the ridges and furrows of a planned field in order to study how fast they become measurable. Very high ridges can be produced by plowing the furrows of a strip inward so that during each season the furrow slices are moved a distance equivalent to their own breadth towards the middle line of the ridge. The author also demonstrates how excavation techniques allow the tracing of furrows and the identificaton of the type of implement used for making them.
