After a brief review of the history and geography of Ecuador, the earthen constructions recently revealed are described, and the attendant conservation problems they pose are analyzed. It is suggested that the Cochasqui site pyramids were built around the years 1000-1300 by a complex society that controlled an extensive territory and population. The buildings were used for astronomical and meteorological observations. Possible contribution by local residents to the research now underway is pointed out.
