Abstract
The increasing restrictions on the type and mode of usage of fumigants requires a new appraisal of their use in museums. Until recently methods of achieving standard conditions in order to compare and contrast the options available were not available. Now sophisticated gas sampling techniques, such as X-rays and ultrasonics (to detect the toxic effects inside tempers for instance) and the general availability of a gas-tight chamber with excellent gas dispersion allows a catalogue of useful information to be built up on the fumigation of museum insect pests. This in turn will allow a better comparison between chemical and physical methods of pest control such as freeze-drying. At present, the deleterious effect of low temperatures on insect pests and objects is little studied, with certain major exceptions. A data-bank of pest control experience is necessary before a museum can adopt a long-term strategy. The Rentokil Bubble, by offering a standardized repeatable fumigation procedure at a known fixed price with a flexibility of fumigant, time, accessories etc., allows museums to plan a strategy of pest control measures with greater choice, safety and effectiveness than before.
