Abstract
The turning and carving of an intricate ivory chess piece gave the author insight into the traditional skills of the Indian carver who had produced the original set from which eight pieces were missing. He discusses his success and difficulties, including the problems of scale in relation to the tools he used, either after modifications or redesign.
