In an attempt to maintain or raise standards of training in the field, the United Kingdom Institute of Conservation Training Committee endeavored as a first step to seek out the common elements of training as required by the different conservation specialists. A basic syllabus and a common pattern for specialist syllabuses built on that published by UKIC in 1985 have been drawn up and are presented here. UKIC has also been developing a program for the accreditation of conservators.
