Abstract
The aim of the respective investigations was to determine the effect of addition of divinylobenzene (DVB) to Melasil K-1S on the polymerization process of the latter in alder wood and on selected properties. The DVB addition amounted to 0.5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of Melasil. At the same time tests on application of styrene instead of Melasil were performed. As polymerization substances the KSB catalyzer in the amount of 2.5 parts by weight per 100 parts per weight of Melasil, while as initators: benzoil peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide and mentapinate hydroperoxide in the amount of 0. 5 parts per weight of each of the initaiators mentioned per 100 parts by weight of styrene were used. The polymerization process was conducted by means of thermal treatment in machine oil Z-26 at application of the following parameters: temperature increasing from 20 to 120°C for 2 hours and temperature of 120°C for 2 hours. The analysis of the results obtained has proved that application of divinylobenzene (DVB) as a cross-linking substance in the amount of 0.5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of imbibiting substance in the process of lignomer production on the basis of Melasil K-1S affects favourably the polymerization process and the quality of the produced lignomer. Lignomer made from Melasil with added DVB is of higher dimensional stability, less higroscopic and is characterized by higher static bending strength, particularly in wet state, as well as by higher hardness then lignomer produced without use of the cross-linking substance. Lignomer produced from Melasil K-1S and alder wood is characterized, except for static bending strength, by better properties than the alder wood-polystyrene composite.
