Three types of standard are discussed: and external standard used for initial and long-term checks on alignment of the unit (e.g. Arkansas stone); unprepared sample of known composition like that of the material under test; prepared sample - specimen - to be placed in the diffractometer. Changes between as-received sample and prepared specimen are induced by grinding, by irradiation with x-rays, and by change of climate (RH, temperature, instrument vacuum).
