Abstract
Standards like ISO 7730 and EN 15251 do not address the aspect of personal control over temperature, airspeed, fresh air supply, etcetera. This implies that the degree of personal control is not important and has no impact on comfort, health and performance in buildings. A literature review was conducted. The scientific literature was screened for field and lab studies on personal control, individual control, local climatisation, temperature control, personal ventilation, operable windows, use of windows, use of table fans, use of ceiling fans, occupant behaviour etcetera. The focus was on studies that looked at ‘end-user effects’ like building related symptoms (SBS), performance, thermal (dis)comfort, perceived air quality and overall occupant satisfaction. Several studies showed that offering occupants control over their indoor climate results in less health symptoms, higher comfort satisfaction rates and improved performance. The overall conclusion therefore was that personal control does matter. Which implies that future IEQ standards should include the aspect of personal control.
