Japanned furniture was made in New England in the first half of the 18th century, as imitations of oriental lacquer work and European tortoise shell decoration. It involved a complex build-up of layers. The main problems of conservation arise from the deterioration of the original ingredients. The shellac has darkened and the complex layer structure has a great tendency to separate. A comprehensive evaluation of restoration methods and materials needs to be done.
