Abstract
Twelve members of the commission for Qualitative Tannin Analysis tested 18 unmarked oak and quebracho wood extracts, some pure and some mixed with a variety of additives. The following tests were used: The Procter-Hirst and Gerngross-Herfeld models of the aniline-hydrochloric acid reaction; Appelius-Schmidt and F. Mueller models of the cinchonine reaction; and two new models of the fluorescence test outlined by Meunier. Based on a point system the new (Gerngross-Herfeld) model of the aniline-hydrochloric acid reaction and the new (Mueller) model of the cinchonine reaction can be recommended; the fluorescence test should be ruled out except in special cases.
