Various brown inks or paints were applied on prints and drawings to obtain a transparent layer of brownish color. The technique of manufacture of bister and sepia is described following early manuscripts. Their effects on different types of paper is described. The results of the scientific analysis by UV/visible spectrometry are given. The consequences of these results for the restoration of painted paper are given.
