Some 12 types of paper, with or without optical brighteners (blueing agents), were tested before and after artificial aging by humid heat or light. Measurements of optical, mechanical, and chemical properties showed that the blued papers behave more or less the same way through the aging process as those that are not blued, if they are made out of whitened chemical paste. It is recommended that blueing agents not be added to pure rag paper.
