Abstract
The conservation of a 16th-century banner posed a number of problems to the team of conservators. The canvas was quite deformed and with numerous rents and missing areas. A series of tests, e.g., adhesive strength of the fibers, compatibility with the paint layers, durability under exhibition conditions, and possible reversibility, were carried out for an adhesive that would withstand edge-to-edge insertion. The choice was aqueous dispersions of thermoplastic polyurethane (Italpur PA 711).
