Abstract
Various types of early crucibles are described. Little work has been done on crucible fabrics because there has been virtually no cross-disciplinary work done between ceramicists and metallurgists. Finds at the EIA hillfort of Gussage All Saints have provided evidence for the production of bronze harness fittings using the lost-wax production; petrographical studies were undertaken on crucibles to determine the source of the materials used in these sherds. Further studies of other crucible molds are briefly presented. Various clay mixes are described. There seem to be two early types of crucibles: a clay-sand variety and a porous coke-like crucible. Crucibles must have adequate refractoriness, adequate density to avoid leakage and resist dissolution by the melt, and thermal shock resistance. See also AATA 20-771.
