Abstract
A proton probe system for elemental analysis has been used in preliminary studies of archaeological copper-based alloys, glasses, and potsherds. Protons generated in a 2 MeV Van de Graaff accelerator and passed into the atmosphere through a pinhole were used to induce the characteristic x-rays for elements from sodium to lead. For the lighter elements a helium atmosphere with no x-ray filter was used, whereas for the heavier elements air or nitrogen with a combination of selective filters was used. This technique is essentially nondestructive, is primarily a surface analyzer, and allows for mapping of the elements. Selected samples from Egypt, Jordan, and Crete were studied to demonstrate the feasibility of the method. See also AATA 19-860 and 20-771.
