An early 16th-century painting by Bartolomeo da Veneto which was thought to be of Saint Catherine was found, after removal of manipulative overpaint, to be Narcissus gazing at his reflection in a pool. The edge of the pool had been given ratchets to resemble the wheel. The treatment took place at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. The garment had been embellished to appear more feminine. Though old, the overpainting did not match the tempera and oil mixture of the original. It is speculated that the restoration was done in the 19th century when the iconography of Narcissus was not as popular as religious imagery. -- AATA
