The history of the pencil as technological artifact is reviewed starting from the mid-16th century when graphite deposits were discovered in Cumberland, and the mineral was cut to fit into wood cases. The design of the artifact changed little over the centuries. Economic and social considerations, as well as cultural expectations, are also studied as are circumstances explaining the ubiquity of the pencil.
