Abstract
This paper attempts to show that mathematics can be relevant to archaeology, by means of an example derived from a conversation with a mathematician. It contends that, by using mathematics we can predict and test relationships, generate alternative data and hypotheses, improve data collection and manipulation, and model the dynamics of the systems shaping the archaeological record. -- AATA
