History and technique of 18th century painted wall hangings, found in Denmark, are presented, based upon evidence from the paintings, accounts, and inventories. A lexicon of 1831 describes saft farver as lazur or juice colors that have been dissolved in water; the paint, consisting of pigments in a medium of gum arabic or senegalese gum, permits the weave of the linen ground to show through. The influence of the tapestry centers is obvious in regard to this focus upon the textile's weave and in regard to subject matter. Specific hangings are discussed. -- AATA
