Metallic coatings produced by hot dipping enjoy very wide popularity today, and examples of their use may be found throughout industry and commerce. They may be used on account of their decorative or protective properties; the latter finding by far the widest application. They provide a rapid and very efficient method of providing protection against corrosion (wet and dry), for a wide range of substrate metals. The method is competitive with other methods of protection, in spite of the recent increases in the cost of many coating metals. Three essentially different types of coating can be applied to metal surfaces to prevent or control corrosion. They are: (1) Organic Coatings, (2) Inorganic Coatings, and (3) Metallic Coatings.
