Abstract
In 1986, a variety of furnishings including lacquer wares, wood wares, bamboo mats, reed mats and straw mats were excavated from the Qin Gong Tomb No. 1 (Qin Jing Gong Tomb, late Spring and Autumn period, ca. 530 B.C.) in Feng Xiang, Shaanxi Province. Since these articles are very important to the study of formative arts and manufacturing technology in ancient China before the unification by Qin Shi Huang Di (221 B.C.), we were asked to take prompt action for the protection and conservation of these articles. Lacquer wares, wood wares and bamboo wares are often found in archaeological excavations in China, but due to the great difference in burial time, geological condition, and materials used, the amount of water content and the degree of deterioration differ widely. It is, therefore, impossible to find a single method of conservation which may be effective for all of these articles. However, through long efforts, conservators have made great progress in treating deteriorated lacquer, wood and bamboo articles. This paper aims first to describe the results of the application of some currently used conservation methods to the articles excavated from the Qin Gong Tomb No. 1 in 1986 and then to report the most delicate restoration work of a water-saturated rotten lacquer basin which was found afterwards from the same tomb.
