Briefly describes the preparation of bird skins with intact feathers. With fresh skins, fat is carefully scraped away. Residual fat is removed by nonresinous, nonstaining wood shavings, potato or corn flour, petroleum ether and alcohol, or carbon tetrachloride (not allowed in the United States) with ventilation. Surfactants such as Eusapon WNL may also be used. With salted skins, salt must be soaked out then rinsed out in warm water. The skins are dried before undergoing fat removal as above. Blood is removed with a detergent solution or with a water, hydrochloric acid, alcohol solution, or oxygen bleach if necessary. Powdered calcium sulfate and warm moving air are used during drying. Diamoll C powder is used to disinfect, Mollescal C. to soften, and Eulan U 33 is used to guard against dermestids, moths, etc.
