Abstract
This report presents the description, condition, and conservation of an European padded horse saddle believed to date from the early 17th century. The saddle consists of woven and nonwoven textiles, wood, three different metals, and leathers. The treatment addresses problems associated with three-dimensional composite objects such as methods of surface cleaning, crease relaxation of textiles and leather, methods of consolidation, adhesives and methods of their application to leather in association with textiles, backing support materials for leather, and surface cleaning of metals. All treatments were carried out without disassembling the piece.
