Briefly summarizes the history of gilt leather in the Netherlands, then discusses traditional art historical methods to determine the dates and workshops of their origin (Jacob de Swart, Hans le Maire, Jacob Frijberge, Martin van den Heuvel, Jacob Hamer). Two examples are used as case histories.
