Abstract
The review (494 references) comprises a monograph chapter summarizing research into the stability of processed photographic images, the factors affecting stability, and the procedures for the restoration and/or long-term preservation of the images. The classes of recorded images considered include: silver gelatin materials (black and white still photographs, motion picture films, microfilm and fiche, x-ray films, astronomical and spectroscopic plates, holograms, instant prints); historical silver halide processes involving collodion (ambrotypes, tintypes) or albumen (printing-out papers) and including daguerreotypes; contemporary dye images (made using processes such as chromogenic development, dye imbibition, silver dye bleach and dye diffusion transfer); and historical color photographic processes. Image stability is discussed in depth and depends on the mechanical (dimensional stability) and chemical properties of the support material, binding agent (such as gelatin), and image-forming substance (silver, dyes). Strategies for preservation and restoration of images are outlined, along with recommended storage conditions (environmental guidelines) for different media. Other topics include: handling and use; emergency preparedness and recovery; duplication, copying and processing of black and white films and papers; restoration of deteriorated images; electrostatic images, electronically stored images (magnetic recordings, optical disks).
