Metallic materials are used in the building of structures because of their unique static mechanical properties. If a metal loses strength as a result of the simultaneous effects of stress and corrosion to an extent greater than the sum of the effects of stress and corrosion acting separately, then the metal is suffering from stress corrosion . The magnitude of the conjoint effects is a measure of the susceptibility to stress corrosion.
