The comparison of phosphorus contents present in iron slags and artifacts can be used to determine if there is a relationship between the two, and therefore may help in assigning provenance to the artifacts. The historical background to the discovery of phosphorus and its influence on the metallic iron made from phosphorus-bearing iron ores is discussed and some Polish data are given in illustration.
