Abstract
The Florida wet sites tend to be accidental discoveries for which there have been no locational models; four types of landlocked wet sites exist within the state. The Windover Site, an isolated peat deposit underlying a small mortuary pond, is the only site of this kind which has undergone controlled excavation. The dewatering or wellpoint system, used to control the water level, is described: apparatus, operation, and costs. PEG 3350 used on skeletal material from the 1984 season has not been as satisfactory as the Rhoplex AC-33 used on like materials from the 1985 and 1986 seasons. Both PEG and dammar treatments of wood and other floral matter have been unsatisfactory; initial desalinization has been recommended. Combinations of PEG, ethulose, Rhoplex, neocryl, and Acrysol are being tested. The textiles have been identified in regard to weave types, but the plant fiber sources have not yet been determined. A summary of both completed and in progress studies based on osteological analysis is given. Isoelectric focusing is a new chemical assay technique to test for proteins in archaeological material. The treatment of brain tissue is described: human mitochondrial DNA has been isolated. Faunal and floral analyses, and palynological and phytolith analyses are summarized; the peat itself was subject to petrographic and chemical analysis. A hydrological overview is provided.
