A description of the 11th-century Hungarian coronation mantle, returned from the USA in 1978 to the Hungarian National Museum, and the identification of dyes and threads. Thin-layer chromatography was used to detect natural dyes; the synthetic dyes were traced by treating the samples with ethyl alcohol, acetic acid, ammonia and water and dyeing of premordanted cotton and wool. The results (tabulated) aided a reconstruction of the original colour scheme and helped clarify the original configuration and later transformation of the textile pieces, strap, and collar.
