Abstract
The history and development of the textile dyeing and finishing industry in Manchester is traced from the early 1700's. Manufacturing plants were introduced in the eighteenth century, with a growth in the use of cellulosic fibers. Vegetable dyes, with their relatively limited color range, were replaced by mineral colors in the later 1800's. In recent history synthetic dyes have experienced a rapid growth in the industry. -- AATA
