Abstract
This technical note identifies sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide emissions as active agents in the degradation of stone statuary. It describes an immersion technique which achieves good penetration of resin, avoids sharp boundaries and allows for some breathing . During the immersion technique described the stone is placed in a mixture of 1:1 acetone and water and graduated up to a bath of pure acetone. Acetone achieves good penetration. The stone is next placed in a bath of acetone and resin and graduated to an eventual immersion in 95 percent resin. Non-polymerized resins mixed with curing agents are employed. These polymerize in the stone. Plasticizers and silica gel can be added. Penetration is up to several centimeters in marble. Samples exposed to polluting gases are stable. This describes a method of impregnation of porous stone in the field as well as the laboratory. -- CCI
