In preparation for accelerated aging tests, the effects of light and heat stress on modern silk broadcloth were studied by examining fractured fibers with the SEM. A characterization scheme was modified to facilitate comparison between untreated, light stressed, and heat stressed samples. Further work is needed to extend the scheme to historic silk but early results are encouraging.
