Abstract
Sixty-nine sherds of Campanian pottery from Magdalensberg (Austria) have been analyzed by mineralogical and petrographical (thin sections, X-ray diffraction, porosity) as well as chemical methods (X-ray fluorescence). All sherds are highly calcareous. The archaeological distinction of two main groups (hard and porous) is confirmed by markedly different chemical compositions of the two groups. By comparison with the actually known fifteen Italian reference groups the hard ware can be attributed to the pottery center of Arezzo, while the porous group probably derives from an unknown center of the Padan valley. One sherd has been made in Sicily. Ten sherds are of unkown origin. As shown by the mineralogical composition, the ancient potters used an illitic, calcareous clay and fired it in a two-stage process (reducing-oxidizing) up to maximum temperatures 950-1050C, as did the Greek potters with the Attic black ware. It seems that the products from Arezzo have been fired to slightly higher temperatures than the Padan pottery. The measured porosity of both major groups is similar.
