Analysis of causes and forms of deterioration of parchment used for manuscripts and documents. The requirements of the restoration materials are outlined. Synthetic polymers meet these requirements sufficiently. Fluoroplastics and alcohol solutions of copolymers of vinyl (acetate) with ethylene stabilize texts which are not resistant to moisture and scaling. Treating parchment with filler to reduce its transparency has not worked well. -- AATA
