This paper describes an experiment designed to investigate the methods used in the craft of comb-making using bone and antler raw materials in dark age and medieval Europe. Through the construction of a complete double-sided composite comb and several trial pieces, questions of required tools, sequence of procedures, and necessary techniques are addressed. After the general sequence of steps in the construction of a complete comb is described, two examples of more elaborate combs are examined in detail from the point of view of construction, showing how the sequence of structural steps established in the experiment apply even in the case of atypical special-order combs.
