Abstract
The petrographic analysis of amphorae from the first and second iron age (VII-I BC), which were said to originate from Marseille, has shown that this origin is not correct. The amphorae studied do not contain any petrographical elements found in the Oligocene basin of Marseille. However, a number of petrographical groups have been found in the material. All of them contain minerals from the metamorphic formations of the Maures and the Esterel. Probable production areas have been determined and all of them are situated along the French Mediterranean coast between Ilyeres and Nice.
