Abstract
Tin can be detected in a copper coin by observing the 9.7 min. <sup>125</sup>tin activity if epi-Cd neutrons are used for the activation. Activation with epi-Cd neutrons is also useful for the determination of indium. For cobalt the 5.1-year activity must be observed if only traces are present. The problem of shielding is important for the activation by epi-Cd neutrons. The observed experimental values of the calibration constants are compared with the values calculated by using the atomic and nuclear constants. The mass ratios of silver, gold, tin, antimony, cobalt and indium to copper are given for the coins. The older of these coins show, in general, stronger alloying with sil ver and tin, whereas up to nearly 1% antimony is present in the more recent coins. Gold is detected as an impurity of the silver used for the alloying. Cobalt is found in the coins minted under Constantine I and later. It was also detected as an impurity. The measured values of the resonance integrals of 3 tin isotypes are given in an appendix. The effective resonance integral of copper was determined for 0.36 -- AATA
