The retablos (small paintings on wood panels) and bultos (carved figures in the round) are painted in tempera medium using a simple palette. The gesso, used to prepare the wood surfaces for painting, is made of local gypsum heated and powdered and mixed with animal glue. A pine resin varnish mixed with wax was used by many santeros to produce a golden glow. Guide lines are set down for cleaning, inpainting and repair of both retablos and bultos.
