Abstract
Diffuse reflection, which gives the psychological impression of mat-ness, is distinguished from specular reflection, and the situation analysed in terms of standard physical parameters. The practical situation of reflection from a paint layer is considered briefly: an index of specular reflection can be expressed only as a complicated relation to which a simple solution has not yet been found.
