Abstract
This study of a tusk excavated at Roxton, Bedfordshire, England in 1976, describes the chemistry and degradation of the hydroxyapatite and organic components. The fractures were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The tusk was conserved with Paraloid B-72 adhesive in acetone and ethanol (injected where necessary). Flaking surfaces were held with a 2% ethyl hydroxy ethyl cellulose (EHEC) solution in industrial methylated spirit (IMS). -- AATA
