Masaccio's fresco cycle has been restored to its original brilliance without the criticism that has risen with the work in the Sistine Chapel, because a marble altar placed against the wall protected a section from light damage and the accumulated soot. This portion of the fresco has thus served as a color guide. A mild solvent applied to the plaster through a protective layer of rice paper was the method used for cleaning. Seams have indicated reworking of the fresco. The work of Masaccio, Masolino, and Lippi can now be differentiated.
