The history of Byzantine silk production originated with the introduction of sericulture during the 6th century requiring a knowledge of silkworm rearing, cocoon processing, and yarn production. Ancient methods are similar to those used today by nonindustrialized countries. Cocoon production involved the control of humidity, temperature, and noise level. Once the silk threads were unwound from the cocoons, the yarn was processed for spinning and weaving.
