The present article sets out these essentially negative conclusions, which are based on the petrographic study of a series of specimens from different Aegean islands, and from mainland Greece. In the last section the possibility is investigated that more recent analytical methods may ultimately allow the valid characterization of marbles from different sources in the Aegean. This prospect does not, however, alter the conclusion that most of the attributions hitherto made, and hence the various observations based on them, are not well founded.
