The following table includes pigments which have been used from prehistoric times to the present day. Those pigments which have been of the greatest historical importance prior to the nineteenth century are marked with an asterick (*). The table is organized by color, and in inorganic and organic subsections for each color. A great number of synthetic organic pigments are currently available in prepared artists' colors, particularly in acrylic emulsions; several of the major pigments in this class are included in the table, but many are not.
