Abstract
Little research has been conducted concerning the conservation of celluloid objects. The collection of these objects at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, is relatively large and exhibits a full range of celluloid objects and their associated conservation problems. Because the chemical composition and technology of celluloid objects are complex and highly variable, treatment of these objects presents many problems. The available literature on celluloid indicates certain general rules for the treatment and storage of these materials. This presentation outlines a program of chemical identification, conservation treatment (or non-treatment), and proper storage as the best available method to preserve celluloid objects.
