In the 60's, the construction of the Aswan Dam created a threat to the monumental heritage of ancient Nubia. Recognizing its responsibility for assuring the conservation of the Abu Simbel Temples, those dedicated to Isis on the island of Philae and numerous others, Unesco decided to respond to the appeal for help and launched an international rescue campaign to which several countries generously contributed. Over a period of 20 years, the temples and tombs were dismantled and reerected on safe sites. The scale of the project and the immense technological challenge were unprecedented in Unesco's history and the undertaking, lead by an international team of experts, came to a triumphant end in March 1980. Mr. Säve-Söderbergh, Professor in Egyptology, who led the Scandinavian mission in Sudanese Nubia, drafted this report which revives the enthusiasm of all the participants and gives valuable guidelines for campaigns of a similar nature. -- AATA
