Abstract
In 1979, a report on the seismic safety of the State Capitol in Sacramento (California, USA) declared the building's west wing an earthquake hazard. The report proposes various restoration possibilities in accordance with earthquake standards. After the study carried out by the California Department of Transformation, a highly technical prospective analysis was undertaken by an architect's office. The analysis includes mass and accelerated response structure spectrography as well as mathematical models representing the building structure and foundations. The presence of two domes and a rotunda causes serious problems relating to the distribution of lateral forces. A second study concerns the destructive elements in the environment (pollution, vibrations). Finally, the architects propose that the actual west wing structure be modified by strengthening the supporting brick walls with cement, and by reinforcing the floors with a steel structure. -- AATA
