Abstract
Identification of natural resins plays a very important role in the conservation of art objects and also in the quality control of commercially available varnish and adhesive preparations. Here, an attempt is made to fingerprint the six Indian natural resins, viz * 2Chandrus*1 (<i>Vateria indica L. </i>), <i>Saldammar</i> (<i>Shorea robusta Gaertn., F.</i>), <i>Rumi-Mastiki</i> (* 2Pistacia lentiscus L.*1), * 2Rosin*1 (<i>Pinus roxburghii Sargent</i>), <i>Guggal</i> (<i>Commiphora mukul Engl.</i>) <i>Shellac</i>, Insect resin (<i>Laccifer lacca Kerr.* 1), by thin-layer chromatography. The six resins are separated in selected 29 solvent systems using silica gel G plate and antimony (III) chloride as a detecting reagent. The solvent systems, i.e. 1-petroleum ether (60-80°C)-ethyl formate-formic acid (93+7+1), 2-petroleum ether (60-80°C)-ethyl acetate-toluene (80+15+5), and 3-ethyl acetate-n hexane (30+70) are found most successful. Thin-layer chromatographic values of six resins in these three systems are reported in the paper. -- AATA
